attention moulds reality

Attention moulds reality. I’ve been drawn to the metaphor of quantum theory as applied to life. On a personal level, it translates into a simple realisation: I am not merely a character in my story, but a co-writer of it. I don’t just inhabit a script; I compose it as I go, each day a page, each hour a line written into being.

This feels true not only in grand, existential ways, but also in the seemingly insignificant. Our perception of the world quietly alters the reality we experience. I can see the sun as a source of light, a powerhouse of energy. Or I can see it as proof of existence itself, as a reflection of God’s immense power.
At the core, this is partly an ontological observation, a topic debated and discussed over and over again by thinkers of all ages. Artists spike our interest in art; mystics persuade us to contemplate the signs of God. In doing so, they are not inventing new realities, but redirecting our attention toward layers of existence we might otherwise overlook. What changes is not the world itself, but the depth at which we encounter it.
Math and science do not create reality; they seek to explain it. Yet the acceptance of reality, in its raw form, has never been enough to satisfy the human mind. So we leaned closer. We paid attention. We examined, measured, named, and ordered what already existed, not to alter it, but to arrive at a rationale the mind could comfortably read. And in doing so, reality became not just something to endure or submit to, but something intelligible to us.
The aspects of life that we actively pay attention to design our life. This human ability explains how, amidst the horrors of war and violence, someone can find meaning in suffering as in Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning. What we choose to fixate on creates our life script. The more we dwell on miseries, the gloomier life appears.
The moment this truth becomes deeply embedded into our soul is when we stop paying attention to things we no longer wish to include in our life story. The metaphorical lens of life begins to develop a filter that cancels out visions inconsistent with the version of the story we are living.
The beauty of this lies in the fact that we are not merely writing the story as observers. We are constantly rewriting our role within it, shaping and refining our character over time so that it coheres with the narrative we claim as our own.
This capacity strengthens with practice. The clearer one becomes about what they seek from life, the more intentionally they can place their attention on what leads them there.
