I've felt like a refugee for the past 10 years of my life. Somewhere deep inside, I believe I am only travelling, searching for the safety of a home I once felt as a child. I moved from a city that I was born in to a place that is supposedly my actual 'home'. The impositions of this world cannot replace the familiarities of the past. And nothing feels more like home than the smell of that town where I spent my childhood. Even today, the mornings that are the best are when my dreams from the preceding night were of those blessed memories and vague incidents occurring in that beloved town of mine.

Now, I've started to think: why do I keep going back to those times? It may not simply be the place itself but the phase of my life that I spent there - the comfort of a carefree childhood that had every reason to hope for a bright future. I knew so little that everything felt possible. Ignorance is such a bliss in childhood!

But as the 27th chapter of my life unfolds each day, these fears have started to bother me less. It has almost become a background noise that my mind is familiar with. Each day, as I try to create my space in this new dynamic world, I live with the awareness that life could have been very different, less confronting if I still stayed there. But what story would I then leave behind?

Perhaps growing up is not about finding our way back to the places where we once felt safe. Perhaps it is learning to live without that certainty, to accept that some discomforts may remain with us, and still choose to move forward.

We live our lives seeking an end to that desperation for solace - someone to take us out of our misery. And more often than not we burden our partners or family with this responsibilty. But it never fades away. I personally deal with it through a strongheld belief - belief that its all ends in the hereafter. And this belief helps me be patient in moments of yearning. Maybe death then, the return of the soul to the Creator Himself, alone can put an end to this desperation. Till then, we can only train ourselves to making meaning out of this discomfort.
