time as divine currency

Of all the things Allah has placed in our hands, none is more finite, more irreversible, or more taken for granted than time.

This has been beautifully propounded in the holy texts, especially in Surah Al-Asr (Chapter 103) of the Quran, which warns of man's loss through time. Imam Al-Shafi'i famously remarked about this chapter: "If people only considered this Surah well, it alone would suffice them for their guidance."

The mistake we often make is measuring loss in terms of money. But the greater loss is that of time. Hasan al-Basri reportedly said: "

I have met people who were more careful about their hours than you are about your money."

The passage of time is a shrinking of opportunities. Each moment is a favour from Allah that could otherwise have been lost to tragedy — and this reality creates a sense of urgency and endows us with accountability. There is also something deeper: the passage of time itself is a manifestation of Allah's Kun — His command, Be, unfolding ceaselessly before us.

The most certain fact is that I am alive, and I have today in my hands. The only thing within my control is this moment and what I weave out of it. How we use our time, then, becomes either an act of worship or an act of transgression
